Very Early Pink Tint Covered Wagon China Head Doll Antique Fashion Clothing 15

  

This charming cabinet-sized German Kestner China head doll is a wonderful example of what collectors have long called a "Covered Wagon"hairstyle. This early 1850's model has a beautiful pink tint and that feature plus her expertly painted decoration combine to give a lustrous translucency to her face.

She has cornflower blue eyes and a slight smile on her lips which makes her look like she has an amusing secret. At 15 she is a perfect cabinet size. Her molded and painted black hair has a center white part in the middle with a smooth crown and soft waves covering her ears. The back of her hairstyle features soft curls at her nape.

She has her original cloth body and leather arms which show typical wear and tear found on a doll almost 175 years old! She is beautifully dressed in a period antique 2-piece. Early Fashion costume from the mid-19th century in a fetching pink and white cotton print, comprising a top bodice or short jacket called a Paletot during the period in which she was made, along with a full, matching skirt; both paletot and skirt are trimmed with narrow bands of fabric contrast featuring the Greek Key design. Her skirt even features an outside skirt pocket made to carry a closed parasol when madam wasn't using it. In my photos you can see where the pocket is as I have put a small bouquet of silk flowers inside it.

She has antique undergarments and ecru booties that are vintage. Perhaps my favorite thing about this little doll is how I can see how much she was loved; her original child owner loved her so much that one of the doll's eyebrows has been almost completely "kissed" off.

This just makes her even more endearing! Perhaps that's why her expression is one of sweetness and mirth.
