AN ABSOLUTE STEAL FOR A GENUINE ANTIQUE Desirable China Head doll--BIEDERMEIER BALD CHINA DOLL. A MUST Have for an antique doll collection!
This is a really superb Beidermeier China head doll, also known in reference books as a Bald Head china doll. She bears the distinctive black area on her bald dome head indicating wig placement. Her original wig with center part and braid in a soft brown mohair, is attached and I have left it intact very nice condition wig! Very delicate pretty face painting with line between upper and lower lips, and lid lines. As you can see in last photo, i think she is an Alt, Beck & Gottschalk.
P 227 of the book Pictorial reference guide for German Chinas. Full face, most likely circa 1860. The unique feature is the red lip line with a V as seen on ABG dolls. No markings, could be inside the shoulder plate but I don't want to remove original stitching of shoulder plate ribbon to body.
Period refers to an era in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848 and this doll with a fuller face was made between mid 1850s to 1860. I've never learned why these dolls came to be called Biedermeier as they somewhat post date that period.
ABG opened their first factory in 1854 and if this is one of their dolls then we can date it somewhere around then. She is around 16 tall, and has her original lace trimmed white dress over a cotton slip and pantaloons (see photos) in good condition, and wears her original soft mohair braided wig. See close up of painted black circle on top of solid dome head.
I made her a circa 1850-60s style brocade cape and coordinating taffeta skirt over the white dress. I also re-purposed an antique lace bonnet to fit her and I do think she looks marvelous now. Add a tiny purse and she is ready for a day of shopping! There are a few older professional patches to the cloth body, see pics, a tiny chip on one shoe that was touched up long ago (not too noticeable) and a tiny little kiln fleck on her nose. She came to me when I started collecting antique dolls years ago, from the original owner's estate, with her vintage white Edwardian tea style dress (possibly redressed by owner over the years as most circa 1860 fabric doll clothes disintegrated unless stored in trunks etc). Regardless, they are a desirable and rare beauty, that is a must if you collect chinas. Priced very well below what they commanded just a few years ago! Check back as I downsize many doll listings from my huge collection.
