This Sumo Champ Doll/Figurine was made by the Sato Hakata Doll Co. And probably dates from the late 1950s. The porcelain has been hand painted in beautiful detail and the surface is matte rather than shiny. Paper dangling decorations are slightly discolored and fragile (one looks like it will easily tear if handled). There is no apparent cracking, chipping or structural damage to the piece.
Display mat is also in very nice shape with a few minor dents, dings in the wooden frame and signs of light use and wear. Underside of Display Stand has handwriting in marker that reads "WAKANAHANA SUMO Champ 1958-59". There is also a "Made in Japan" stamp.Underside of Doll shows trade-mark No. 501072 (I think), patent markings, Sato Hakata Doll Co. And other information that is only partly visible due to an indentation/abrasion in the plaster that caused the stamp to not fully print. Sumo Doll measures approximately 10 3/4" tall with a foot spread of about 8". Front to back at widest area is approximately 5 1/2.
Sumo Mat Display Stand measures approximately 10 5/8" x 8 1/4" x 7/8. The item "Vintage Sato Hakata Japanese Sumo Champ Porcelain Doll Figurine" is in sale since Saturday, August 11, 2018.
