THE TEN BONUS DOLLS ARE MADE OF UNGLAZED BISQUE AND RANGE IN SIZE FROM 3 TO 4 INCHES. A GREAT BONUS FOR THE DISCERNING DOLL COLLECTOR! Up for sale are four beautiful examples of Frozen Charlie glazed porcelain German dolls from the mid to late 1800s. Three are "pink luster" Charlies, the rarer form of the doll, and the smallest doll is the more common white glazed porcelain. The largest pink tint Charlie shown here is an example of a very large and very early Charlie.

I have had these dolls for approximately 20 years. I acquired them from a lifelong collector of primarily German dolls who explained that these dolls, though unmarked, were made in Germany in the mid to late 1800s. Each doll is molded in one piece and is a standing naked doll. Frozen Charlies (and Frozen Charlotte girl dolls) ranged in size from less than an inch to more than 18 inches. This lot ranges in size from approximately 7 inches to more than 16 inches for the largest one.

Hopefully there is a collector out there who would also want to keep them together. These glazed porcelain or china dolls were often used by children as bathing dolls during the 19th century, and were made with a small hole in their bottoms to allow the water to escape.

It's hard to imagine that children actually played with and bathed with these fragile china dolls, and of course not too many of the larger early dolls survived. These dolls were very popular in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Many of the nation's European immigrants brought these dolls with them when they came to America. The largest pink tint doll stands over 16 inches tall, and has his arms bent and fists clenched.

He has a very large tummy and a visible navel. Take a close look at each of these sweet boys. Examine the photos closely and you will see the exquisite detail that made these dolls so popular. Most of these type of dolls were manufactured in Germany between 1850 and the early 1900s, but nearly all are unmarked like these are. The entire bodies of these dolls are glazed, except for small unglazed areas on the bottoms of their feet.

The three largest dolls have a pale pinkish tint on their entire bodies, called a "pink luster", and they are considerably rarer than all white Charlies. The pink luster on the largest doll is more intense than on the other two pink tint dolls. There are some very miniscule black specks under the glaze that occurred during the firing of the pieces. Charlie's piercing eyes are hand painted. There are tiny red spots at the inside corners of each Charlie's eyes.

Hand painted features include exquisitely shaped eyebrows and upper eyelids, along with a closed mouth, beautifully shaped and pink in color. Hair of each Charlie is molded and hand painted with ultra fine feathering around the front and sides. These Charlies are sure to delight you and would be a great addition to anyone's collection.

Frozen Charlotte and Charlie dolls got their name from an old folk tale related in a folk ballad "Young Charlotte" by William Carter. It tells the story of a young woman who froze to death while riding to a New Year's dance in 1840. As the tale goes, her beau was heartbroken by this and also died, and they lie together in one tomb. You will rarely find a lot of dolls as exquisite as these Frozen Charlies. Please review all photos in detail as they are considered part of the description. Thank you for your interest!
