Porcelain doll, Vintage 1980 ELFIN KING, Wicket Originals Faith Wick

In 1978, Faith formed Wicket Originals, a cottage industry composed of fine craftsmen around the United States, offering fine quality, original, dressed sculptures in VERY LIMITED editions to the discerning collector. Faith would sculpt the original "Little Person" character/doll in clay, then a "master mold maker" would create a mold into which the "porcelain artisan" would pour the porcelain "slip" to obtain the "greenware" which, after careful cleaning, would be fired in a kiln. Next would come the porcelain painter, body maker, costume maker, wig maker, &, where necessary, the leatherworker, weaver, metal worker, glass blower, woodworker, & any other artisans required to complete the piece. Within a few years, EFFANBEE Doll Company asked her to design dolls for them, & her career took on the new dimension of designing dolls & giftware for not only EFFANBEE, but also ENESCO, SILVESTRI/BALOS, DAKIN, DOLLSPART, & others. The Founder of the National Institute of American Doll Artists, Helen Bullard, has written Faith's biography, & Seeley Ceramics has produced two books outlining & explaining her sculpting techniques.

Faith is well known for her creativity & the abundance of her designs - especially interpretations of children's stories, folklore, & fairy tales. This particular character, the "ELFIN KING" goes along with the folklore theme of which she was so fond. Faith was never too enamored of recreating "beauty", "handsomeness", or "grace" necessarily in her characters. These original porcelain characters from "Wicket Originals" are an example.

They are beautifully hand painted, yet their features are exaggerated more toward the grotesque than to the beautiful. Ask yourself - "How would you imagine, if you were born WAY before "LORD OF THE RINGS" or "HARRY POTTER, or the internet - that the King & Queen of the Elfin World would look like. These characters were Faith's interpretation of what she imagined. The head, ears, hands, & lower arms of the "ELFIN KING" are hand painted porcelain, as are his lower legs & striped stockinged feet in purple leather elfin boots.

Pay special attention to the detailed molding & hand painting of her hands & fingernails. The face of the "ELFIN KING" is, basically the same face as the "GOBLIN FOLK" with more elaborate makeup, but his hair is a mass of brilliant white locks ala King Louis XIV. His body is stuffed muslin over a wire armature.

He is dressed in "fur" trimmed pink & purple robes with a beautiful complimentary cumberbund with an elaborately designed insignia buckle. Topping off his royal attire is an ornate "crown" adorned with "crystals"! PERFECT FOR THE COLLECTOR THE UNUSUAL & UNIQUE, THE "ELFIN KING" WOULD CERTAINLY MAKE A BOLD STATEMENT IN YOUR HOME DECOR & THE SUBJECT OF MANY CONVERSATIONS! Height = 18" (22" including crown).

Weight = 2.5 lbs. THIS IS A VERY RARE COLLECTIBLE - A FIND ONE IS NOT LIKELY TO COME BY AGAIN IN PRIVATE HANDS! IT IS CRITICAL TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF RETAINING A RECORD OF THE "PROVENANCE" (HISTORY OF OWNERSHIP) OF THESE FINE COLLECTIBLES.

Imperfections in the glaze/paint, loose stones, etc. ALL OF MY COLLECTIONS HAVE BEEN STORED IN A TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN OUR SMOKE-FREE, PET-FRIENDLY HOME.
