Estate Find 25 German China Shoulder Head Doll. We offer an antique China Shoulder Head Doll which was one of two gifted in 1885 to Gertha and Bertha, twin daughters of an Iowa family.According to handwritten notes, our doll descended through the family of Gertha Gerette Gause of Osceola, Iowa. Our doll features a china head with molded hair parted in the center. Her curly hair is painted black and her face is carefully painted with blue eyes and rosy cheeks and lips. The head and shoulder is mounted to a solidly packed muslin body. Our doll has white china arms with hands and fingers.
The china legs have a blue painted garter and terminate into pointed high top shoes with squared heels painted black with tan soles. The cloth body is intact with no tears. There is a faint firing line on the upper right arm and one shoe has missing black paint on the right side. The doll is large measuring 25 in height.
The head measures 4" in width and 3 1/4" in height and 5 1/8 in width at the shoulders. The arms measure 4 3/4" in length and the legs measure 5 1/4" in length. The doll wears a printed dress with an original hang tag for Major T. Jester which was a chain of department stores in Indiana from the early 1940s through the 1960s.
The under garments may be original to the doll. She has a linen blouse and skirt over pantaloons. She has long stockings held in place with elastic floral garters. Unmarked, the doll is attributed to the German china shoulder head dolls crafted by Alt, Beck & Gottschalck starting in the 1880s.
