From my own long-time collection, I'm offering a huge 32" 1860's Civil War period china head doll with "Stargazer Eyes. She is a very early flat-top hairstyle china head as evidenced by her high quality and superb modelling. I bought her about 30 years ago and she had come from the family of the original owner. Her porcelain shoulder head may be pressed into the mold rather than poured, but I haven't ever removed it from her body.
Her gorgeous head measures 9" tall with deeply sloping plate, measuring 9 1/2" across her shoulders. Her head circumference measures 19 at the widest part of her hair. She has a perfect head & plate with no damage or repairs, with three sew holes both front and back.
Her porcelain is pure without firing flaws or marks, and her features are beautifully painted. "Stargazer Eyes" refers to her upward glancing eyes which gives her an air of peaceful serenity.
Very few of these large, early shoulder-heads have survived without damage as they are very heavy. She needs to be displayed sitting in a chair, carriage, or wagon as she is too large and heavy to stand. She retains her original gusseted cloth body with leather arms and individually-stitched fingers. Her body was recovered long before she came to me and because her head is so heavy, the previous owner has the head tied securely to the body with extra cloth strips(see pics)to make sure it is especially secured. Her arms, as shown, need replacement or better repair but I have enjoyed her as she is because I value her originality. When adding her to my collection, she cane with a vintage green print cotton dress with long sleeves which covered & protected her fragile arms and is included(pic). I bought an original 1860's period child's red wool dress that is lined, sewn by hand and embellished with ornate, black soutache embroidery.
The dress is a little big for her, but she has two dress choices to switch between and the red dress, with pockets, could be easily altered by someone who sews. Her antique costume includes several layers of undergarments, including pantaloons, several layers of petticoats, socks, and black oilcloth German shoes. If you have always wanted to find the perfect example of a large, child-sized china head doll, perhaps you will consider her for your own collection.
