RARE Vintage Antique 4' Tall Weary Willie Hobo Porcelain Clown Doll. Extremely RARE Vintage Antique about 4 foot tall collectible! The original (not imitation) Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" Circus Clown Doll.

Historical piece from the 1940's to 1970's. In excellent condition, considering its age. The head, hands, shoes are all made from Bisque Porcelain.

You can sit him anywhere. Measures almost 4 feet from head to foot when lying flat. Limited production makes this a rare piece.

Americas most famous and recognizable clown icon was masterminded by comic Emmett Kelly Sr. A beloved American circus performer. But his vision for a sad-faced hobo clown met some resistance at the time (late 20s). At that time, clowns were depicted with white makeup and happy faces, and so Kelly had to follow the trend. Times and attitudes changed when the country was in the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

In 1933, Weary Willie quickly won the hearts of audiences everywhere he performed. Downtrodden and world-weary was the face of the nation. People could identify with Weary Willie like never before. Weary Willie, his frowning, whisker-shadowed face and his dirty, torn and worn costume, went on to become an American icon. Most likely the part of his act that fans waited for the most was when Willie picked up his broom and tried to sweep up the spotlights beam. The spot would move around on the floor. He would get it smaller, but it never totally disappeared as the audience watched in delight. I'm still trying to locate the broom for his left hand so Willie can try to sweep up that spotlight! However, for the moment, it is not included.
