This absolutely stunning vintage porcelain lady doll was made by Karen Rozmus. I've held onto this one for a long time, as it's hard to part with her; she's so beautiful.

Everything about this doll is wonderful, but my favorite element is her perfect face. The doll's face is crafted exactly like an antique German bisque doll, from the shape of her face, to the way her cheeks, lips, eyebrows, and eyelashes are painted, and especially to her stunning blue glass eyes. (Her eyes do not open and close).

Again, similar to an antique German bisque doll, her head and neck are separate from her bust, so it is attached in a way that allows you to gently turn her head a little, or make her nod! She has beautiful white blond hair, pulled up into a large bun on top of her head, but with tendril curls framing her face and neck. She wears gorgeous blue crystal earrings and an amazing necklace made of blue beads and green crystal gems. Her gown is remarkable: she has a black form-fitting bodice, with a. Jacket over it, featuring long flared sleeves, and a matching.

Large, full skirt with a separate long full train. The jacket, skirt, and train are all trimmed with lovely black edging, piping, and ribbons, and the skirt features a beautiful black ruffle along the hem. At her waist is a bunch of gold fabric roses NOTE: Due to age, these roses are starting to deteriorate into separate threads.

They are hidden under her right arm, so are not in plain view, and could easily be "repaired" with a thin outer layer of watered-glue to reshape them and keep them intact. I did not want to undertake this repair, but choose to leave it to her new owner. Underneath the main over-skirt is a lovely taupe silk petticoat, trimmed with black lace.

Underneath this petticoat is an ivory cotton petticoat with ivory lace, and beneath this she wears ivory cotton pantelettes, also trimmed with lace. She wears an adorable little matching hat, with black trim and black ribbons, and several gold fabric roses (these are in fine condition). I would estimate this costume as appropriate for the early to mid-1800s to early 1900s.

Her beautiful taupe high-button boots are painted on (though their details are molded into the dolls legs, so have a three dimensional effect). As mentioned, her porcelain head and neck are one piece, but are attached to her porcelain bust piece to allow for some slight movement. Her forearms and hands are porcelain, as are her calves and booted feet. Her upper arms and upper legs are cloth-covered wire, as is her torso; as a result, you can bend her arms and legs, and bend her at her waist.

She can't really be made to sit, however, given her voluminous skirts. She comes with a doll stand, which she doesn't really need, since her train and skirt keep her standing without it.

I do not know if Karen also painted, dressed, and wigged this doll, but whoever did has done a remarkable job on all fronts! Karen Rozmus' maker's mark,'ROZ', is impressed in the back of the neck of this doll. I think it also says "93" after the "Roz", but I can't be certain without risking damage to her neck attachment and hair. From the Princeton Toy & Doll Museum, which closed in 2018.

She is truly a museum piece! Karen Janet Rozmus, an American artist and porcelain doll maker, was the recipient of numerous best in show awards in doll making in the 1980s and 90s. She was a member several renowned doll clubs. Karen Rozmus was born in 1952 in Chicago, and was a teacher of doll making at various guilds, etc throughout the mid to late 1980s.
